Eating Healthily: Improving Your Habits

Author: Adriana Noton  //  Category: food

One of the best habits that anybody can develop is eating healthily. Healthy eating habits goes a long way in maintaining your health. As the old adage goes, ‘We are what we eat’. Aside from doing exercise routines, eating healthily is the other side of the equation.

The conditions for healthy eating are much different than it was a generation ago. No longer is a healthy diet about eating ‘three square meals’ per day. In fact, this expression originated from the British navy, referring to the wooden square plates that cooks used to serve food. While the naval diet is not exactly healthy (as you may know, Scurvy was a common disease in the Seven Seas), the tips outlined below are sure to keep your body energized:

* Watch how many calories you eat. Do not eat too much or too little. As a general rule of thumb, the recommended value per day is 2000 calories. There are other factors to consider, however, such as age, height, weight, and amount of physical activity.

* Eat a wide variety of food. Do not just eat within one food group all the time. You should maintain a healthy diet that includes vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. Feel free to explore different foods!

* Eat the proper serving. Nowadays, restaurants give you portions that are way too large, which contributes to the obesity rates everywhere. The word ’supersize’ has unfortunately entered our vocabulary. In other cultures, the food portions are much smaller (and consequently much less expensive). The next time you dine out at a restaurant, split up any large restaurant dishes between multiple people. Not only do you save money, but you are also eating healthier!

* As mentioned before, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Your body needs a fine balance of complex carbohydrates (or whole grains, such as whole wheat and brown rice). These are used more slowly in your body, thus keeping you full for a longer period of time. Fresh organic local produce is also highly recommended.

* Drink lots of water. Although the myth of drinking 8 glasses of water per day has been debunked, we should still drink plenty of fluids daily. Water is one of the healthiest substances in this planet. Our bodies are consists of 80% water.

* Eat less refined sugar, salt, and grain. We put excessive amounts of unhealthy condiments into our food. While it makes our meals taste better, it also contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle. Too much sugar contributes to diabetes and obesity, while too much salt may give us heart problems. A recent study shows that Canadians eat 50% too much sodium, contributing to a wide variety of health problems.

* Exercise regularly. Eating a healthy diet is only part of the equation. If you add in routine physical activity, you can further improve your well-being.

Eating healthily is a step by step process. All of the tips above should not be implemented at once. Instead, you should slowly work these habits into your life at a pace that makes you feel comfortable. The best way to develop healthy eating habits is through time, patience, and commitment.

In order to lead a healthy life, you must understand the mechanisms behind maintaining your physical and emotional well-being. Follow this informative health advice blog for more useful resources on enhancing your healthy lifestyle.

The Elegant Flan

Author: Christine Szalay-Kudra  //  Category: food

One of best-known Mexican desserts is flan. This is a dessert that has made its way around the world. It is a sweetened custard baked in caramel sauce. This is a dessert that is popular with young and old; rich and poor. Flan has a long and rich history that stretches all the way to ancient Rome. The ancient Romans began keeping chickens for eggs and meat. As their surplus of eggs grew, they began looking for new ways to use them. When they took a look at the Greeks, they found a recipe that they adapted into what is today a custard. Roman custards were usually savory rather than sweet.

Rome shared this recipe as they conquered Europe. When Rome fell, the custard recipe they developed flourished throughout medieval Europe. As the recipe was adapted, more sweet versions were created. In Latin, this dessert was known as flado, for custard. In French, it became flaon and eventually it came to be called flan.

Eggs were considered to have healing benefits, so flan was served to aid the liver, kidneys, and chest as well as to increase fertility. Flan spread across Europe, satisfying hungry bellies everywhere. Spain developed a sweet version topped with a caramel sauce. The recipe was brought to the New World when the Spanish arrived in Mexico.

Mexican cooking has brought the flan to a level all of its own. Mexican flans are usually made in a pan called a bain marie, which includes a pan for the custard as well as an outer pan for the water bath. Using a bain marie, a flan may be cooked in the oven or on top of the stove. If one does not have this pan, flan can be made in any number of glass, porcelain, Pyrex or other non stick dish that can be set into a pan of water in the oven.

You can also use ramekins to make flan if you want to make smaller, individual servings. A large flan is still pretty impressive, though. They are not too difficult to make. Just be sure to follow all the directions carefully. With a few simple ingredients you can end up with an elegant dessert. What more could you wish for?

Vanilla is the primary flavor used in flan. You can also find them in other flavors, however, such as pumpkin, lime, coconut, lemon, and almond. All these flavors are delicious and they all come with the signature caramel sauce.

Just like several other authentic Mexican desserts, flans give a creamy coolness to the mouth after the heat of your entre. This soothing dessert is also perfect when someone is a bit under the weather. It is easy to digest and nourishing. It also tempts the appetite.

So, try making a flan at home. Go ahead, do not be afraid. This simple dessert can take some practice to truly master, but it is worth it to give your family and friends an elegant dessert. Serve it up on special occasions or just because it sounds good. You will be adding flan to your list of desserts that are tried and true.

Mexican dessert recipes also have low calorie offerings. You can try making some delicious sorbet. It is very refreshing on a hot day. Lime, pineapple, and mango are common flavors to make. For a real kick, make up some pineapple jalapeno sorbet. You will never see sorbet the same way again.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Entertaining on a Dime

Author: Christine Szalay-Kudra  //  Category: food

So you want to throw a party, but you do not have a lavish budget. There will not be any silver serving trays and waiters in black ties mingling among your guests with fancy hors d’oeurves. You would be surprised how nice you can make everything look on just a tiny bit of money, however.

You do not need fancy trays to make your food look good, but you do need to pay attention to how you present your food. You can make a simple piece of cardboard into a beautiful backdrop for food by covering it with aluminum foil and a couple paper doilies. Be sure to put the shiny side of the foil down so the duller side shows. It makes it look more like pewter. Arrange your food on the doilies so the lacy parts show towards your guests.

If you are a fan of sandwiches for parties, make up a simple sandwich board. Grab a piece of 1 x 4 lumber. Cut it to the length you want… three to six feet is usually adequate. Clean the wood up with a mild detergent and let it dry completely. Wrap the board in waxed paper. Decorate with paper doilies by securing them in place with tape, making sure the lacy bits will face your guests. Your sandwiches can be arranged along the board and it will look lovely.

When you make these sandwiches, use the long loaves of French or Italian bread. Pile on the fixings like tomato, lettuce, and meats. Other delicious ingredients you may want to include are thin slices of cucumber, onion, or avocado. Use decorative toothpicks to hold the sandwich slices together, putting them in before you cut. Once the entire loaf has been made into a sandwich, cut into one inch slices. If you dress the sandwich with a simple oil and vinegar dressing, it suddenly rivals any gourmet sandwich you can buy.

Use pretty bread baskets to display baked goods. You can find them at your local craft store. Line the basket with a pretty towel before filling it up with rolls, biscuits, or muffins. If you want to serve condiments, set out your butter, cream cheese and jam out on small plates arranged near the basket.

Crackers have gotten very expensive. Another item you can serve in place of them is toast points. This old fashioned appetizer is easily made with your favorite bread and your toaster. Cut each slice in four pieces, cutting on the diagonal. Top them with tasty spreads or toppings like cream cheese and berries or salsa and shredded cheese.

Add this cold appetizer recipe along with any others you may like to your recipe file. You will be amazed at how simply you can throw a party your friends will rave about. Presentation is the key to making even the simplest appetizers look scrumptious.

Do not forget to serve enough beverages. You can simply serve coffee or tea or you can make fruit punch or lemonade. If you are really keeping it simple, offer soda. Match up paper cups with napkins and your party will be all set for your guests. Parties should be enjoyed, not stressful.

Gather some holiday appetizer recipes early so you can get ready for your holiday parties. You want to choose appetizers that are easy to make, yet make an inviting appearance on your table. They should be made with fresh ingredients so your guests get a great tasting bite every time.

Buying Tips When Purchasing A Contemporary Dining Table

Author: Deke Primo  //  Category: dining

The dinner table is one of the most important items of furniture within a home. It’s where the family can come together to discuss their problems and to help each other out. Children in families that all eat together have been proven to get on better at school and achieve better grades. The dining table plays an important part in this because it has to be comfy and fit everyone around it.

The size of your family and the amount of people you normally have round to dinner parties will have a large bearing on the size of the dining table you require. The most common shapes of a dining table are circular and rectangular so you should be able to find something to fit in every shape of room. I preferred a circular dining table as it means every can easily see each other and helps to promote conversation.

For household or often have extra guests but don’t want a large table taking up loads of room the rest of the time then an extendible table is a great solution. You simply insert some extra wood in between the middle of the table and you have more room for extra dinners.

A craze to hit the UK in recent years is ‘mixing and ‘matching’. It’s not for the faint hearted as it involves buying a completely different type of type and individually styled chairs. You effectively make your own set from all the different designs available. This can be difficult to do so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have some artistic flair in you.

Glass, plastic, metal and wood are just some of the materials available to have your dining room table made out of. The key to choosing your material is to make sure it matches the style of the rest of your home.

If you have a very old fashioned house like a period cottage then it makes far more sense to go for a solid wood table rather than a glass table with a chrome metal frame!

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Handling Seafood

Author: Ken Kudra  //  Category: food

Seafood is an important part of any healthy diet. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, high quality protein, and many other essential nutrients your body needs. In order to get the most out of your seafood, however you need to handle it properly. Follow these basic food safety tips to make sure your seafood is as tasty when you eat it as it was when you bought it.

When you go to buy fish at the grocery store or in a seafood shop, the fish should be displayed either in a refrigerated unit or on a thick bed of fresh ice. The entire fish area should smell clean and fresh, not at all fishy. Take a close look at the seafood. The eyes on whole fish should be slightly bulged and clear. There are only a few types of fish that have cloudy eyes and most are not commonly sold at the market.

Fillets and whole fish should have firm, shiny flesh. Their gills should be bright red and free of any slime. Dull colored flesh could mean the fish is past its prime. When pressed, the meat should spring back. Fillets should not show any drying or darkening around the edges. There should not be any discoloration, such as green or yellow, and there should not appear to be mushy or dry areas.

Shellfish come with a tag or label from their processors. No fishmonger should have a problem showing you these tags or labels if you request it. Really good ones will have them displayed with the seafood. These tags are marked with the processor’s certification number and other information you may need to know about your seafood.

Toss any oysters, clams, or mussels that are cracked or broken. To check whole ones, tap on the shells. Live shellfish will close up tightly when tapped. If they do not close, pass them by. Lobsters and crabs that are purchased alive should be showing some leg movement. They spoil very fast, so buying these foods live is the only way to guarantee what you are getting is fresh.

Once you get home, store your seafood safely. If you will be using it within two days of purchasing, put it in a cold area of the refrigerator. If you will be waiting longer, you should consider freezing it. Living seafood should be eaten the same day you purchase it ideally. Frozen seafood should be thawed gradually overnight in the fridge. Always remember to wash your cutting board, knives, and hands to prevent cross contamination with other foods.

Whether you are making seafood appetizers or a full meal, you should always be sure your seafood is cooked properly. Fish should be opaque and flaky when done. Shrimp and lobster will turn a lovely pearl opaque color. Scallops are a firm milk white. Clams, oysters, and mussels are done as soon as their shells pop open. Those that do not open should not be eaten. Do not overcook your seafood either.

By following these procedures, your seafood will not only taste great, your guests and family will have a meal that is safe to eat. The worst thing that can happen is for your guests to get sick from eating at your event. Taking these simple precautions will give you delicious food that is safe.

Vita Mix Juicer

Author: Michael Ricther  //  Category: food

In making an award-winning commercial, you should always Dress for Success. “Our teams wear our pajamas for Thanksgiving,” said Mary Kate Anderson. “Everybody is like, ‘I love your shirt together!”

The women in pink pajamas are a signature style of three-minute infomercial for Vita-Mix juicers created by Mary Kate Anderson, 27, and her sisters, Cambria Anderson, 34, and Melissa Washburn, 32. The sisters filmed in December, and in the online vote last month, won the People’s Choice Award – a grant of $ 5,000 – for Vita-Mix in the whole country “Pitch Me!” video contest.

Vita-Mix is a U.S. company that markets a full line of juicers for mixing and is characterized by its history of advertising on television. After many years of establishing its product line, the company purchased blocks of 30 minutes of airtime in 1950 to announce his Vita Mix juicers using what it claims was the beginning of the first infomercial.

Washburn and Mary Kate Anderson, who lives in Orem, and Cambria Anderson, who lives in Shelley, Idaho, decided to enter the “Step on me!” Contest after learning that Vita-Mix was having a contest by e-mail list.

“We are very important to the healthy lifestyle and diet,” said Washburn. “We use our juicers several times a day. We thought, ‘Why not? ”

After the meeting in Idaho for Christmas, the presentation of the video of their sisters was filmed all in one afternoon with a tripod and video camera. There was only one problem: “We wanted to show everyone a recipe,” said Washburn, “but only had enough ingredients to do it once. So I had one shot. ”

The three sisters started their juicers at the same time. Oops. “We rehearsed, we pushed it, we all Rant, we begin to mix and cut power,” said Mary Kate Anderson said. Execution of the three juicers overloaded a power circuit, a break in filming. Problem? Not at all.

When Mary Kate Anderson edited the video it was used to provide energy blooper gag-reel finish.

After entering their video in the contest, the sisters wanted to e-mail friends and family and get their vote. Except Cambria Anderson said: “How can you send an email asking people to vote for you so that you can make money?

“We feel this kind of self-service,” said Washburn.

The contest was a completely different meaning, however, after the sisters agreed that if they won they would donate the money for services for LDS humanitarian aid in Haiti. (The sisters have not yet received their reward check, but the plan to give as much money as allowed by tax law.)

Brandon owns the Vita Mix juicer site where he has an in depth review on the Vita Mix 4500.

Feeding a Super Bowl Crowd

Author: Ken Kudra  //  Category: food

With the Super Bowl just a few weeks away, have you decided what to serve the crowds of screaming football fans that will be invading your home? Do yourself a favor and keep it simple. No one will want to leave the game for a formal meal. Just give them snacks they can enjoy while they watch the game.

Set up a buffet near the viewing area so everyone can get easy access to the food. If you want to serve hot food since the weather is cold, put some crock pots to use. Crock pots can be used to make chili, pulled pork for sandwiches or stew. Swedish meatballs can be picked out of a crock pot with toothpicks or skewers. Other hot dishes could include a big pan of lasagna or a big pot of spaghetti. These foods can be put together ahead of time and cooked at the last minute. Set them out on the buffet and let your guests serve themselves. Buffalo wings are always a hit and they are a breeze to make.

Chips and dips are a great idea. Salsa can be served over cream cheese and served with tortilla chips. Do not order a big deli sandwich… make one. You can use several loaves of French bread or round artisan loaves. Fill them with deli cold cuts and cheeses, wrap them up, and put them in the fridge. When you are ready for them, cut and serve. You can even warm them in the oven if you want to.

If you made that crock pot of chili or stew, serve it with hollowed out bread bowls. Your guests can eat the bowl as well as the main dish. Hot dogs or baked potatoes are easy. Cook a bunch and let your guests top them with their choice of condiments and toppings.

An appetizer only party is a great way to open up your options for food. You can serve everything from simple crackers and toppings to fancy appetizers like rumaki. It is completely up to you. Football fans will love anything wrapped in bacon. Try cooking cheese, shrimp, or sausage wrapped in bacon and served on a toothpick. While it probably will not be ht healthiest option, it will sure taste good!

Provide your thirsty guests with plenty to drink. Keep a cooler of beer and soda on hand to quench that thirst that occurs from screaming at the television during extremely good or bad plays. Stock up on several varieties so everyone can enjoy their favorites. Keep them chilled on ice in a few coolers near the food table.

Whatever Superbowl party recipes you decide to make is up to you. Just make sure you make enough to satisfy your guests. Set the food out on the table in shifts so there is always something tasty to eat. You do not want to go down in history for running out of food by halftime.

Keeping your guests fed while they enjoy the game will ensure you a successful Super Bowl party. You will even have time to enjoy the party yourself and watch the game!

Making uncomplicated Superbowl party recipes means that you can prepare all your munchies well in advance and relax with your guests when the game starts.
