How Hidden Psychological Trigger Helps You Easily Lose Weight

Author: Dorthy Weatherbush  //  Category: food

You are fat. Chunky, round, stout, heavy, hefty, stocky, beefy, corpulent, chubby, blubbery: fat. You see it in the mirror, in the size of your pants, on that awful scale. Maybe it snuck up on you one burger or French fry at a time. Perhaps you have been big all your life. No matter what, you have decided that today is the day. Your road to weight loss starts right now.

But how? There are of course the usual answers. Diet, exercise, and eating right. Of course, you respond. I knew you were going to say that. Everyone knows that, it is obvious. But really, how? What diet, which exercise? What if you don’t succeed? Well, you’ll just be fat, the way you are now.

The hardest part of losing the weight will not come to you in the gym. Sweating will not be your demise. Your downfall will come slowly. You will be excited at first, but then the doubt will set in. Or the worry, or the time constraints. What can you do to circumvent all of these things? What is the miracle answer behind finally dropping the weight that has been holding you down too long? The answer is so simple. The road to thin just got a little less treacherous.

The single most important factor to ensuring a successful weight loss is this: determine your why. Why do you want to lose the weight? Of course you want to be healthy or look attractive, but what truly guides your desire. Think deeply: envision yourself thin. What are you doing, where are you going, what are you wearing? This is your answer. Write it down. Flesh it out until it is exactly, precisely the moment you are working toward.

If you desire to be healthier, more attractive, and keep up with your kids, your ‘why’ may be “to play softball wearing short shorts in the park.” Make it as real for yourself as it is going to be. Write it down on paper somewhere. Give yourself at least ten good ‘whys’. Now you have written them and they are in stone. Use these as reminders of why you are doing what you are doing and use them as motivation to continue. Is it a vacation that you desire?

A picture of the small seats on European public transportation will remind you to keep on that treadmill. A clothes catalog in the take out menu drawer will magically remind you how to make a salad. Your weight loss journey and the motivation it takes to make it triumphant are very personal, but your whys shouldn’t be. Remember to share them with them people close to you. Telling others about your goals will give you yet another reason to do well.

Regardless of what it is, your answer lies within you. Your reason why will ultimately be the driving force behind all that you do in your life. In this particular instance, having your why will be the force that forces you to act (or not act) in order to achieve your goal. Your why will get you up out of bed or off the couch. It will lace your trainers. Your why will make that salad look great and the sore muscles feel victorious. Armed with your own personal secret weapon, your success is all but guaranteed.

The Modern Ice Cream Freezer

Author: Wally Clydesdale  //  Category: food

Now that summertime is gone, it’s tempting to send your ice cream freezer to the back of the cabinet but why? Anyone for pumpkin ice cream? And if you don’t have an ice cream maker, why not check out the local department store. You’ll often find some very good deals during their summer-clearance sales. And if you do pick up one, you might be curious about how they work.

Virtually all ice cream makers work on the same principal. You take an ice cream mixture, lower the temp of the mixture until it’s almost frozen while at the same time beating air into the mix.

While there are many styles of ice cream machines, choosing one can be a little difficult. Here are three basic types. The first type is the “old-fashioned” type. Basically, These use rock salt and ice to chill your ice cream mixture

Then there is the canister type. This unit uses a freezable bowl, which you store in your freezer, to get your ice cream mix cold enough. A canister ice cream freezer is generally less messy than the first kind.

The last kind of ice cream maker could be considered the luxury model of ice cream makers. No freezable bowl, no ice, no rock salt, these units have a built in freezer. On the plus side, they are ready at a moments notice for whipping up a batch of homemade ice cream.

There are a couple of downers though. The first is price. These electric ice cream machines can run into several hundreds or thousands of dollars. You might also find some models don’t have removable bowls which can make cleanup a pain in the you-know-what.

Well that’s about it as far as the different types of ice cream makers. Earlier, I stated that your ice cream machine can be a year around appliance and here’s what I mean. Pumpkins and sweet potatoes go into a lot of staple hot fall foods but they are great in ice cream too. And vanilla ice cream is really tasty on pumpkin pie.

Wally Clydesdale’s knowledge in ice cream extend back to his days as a child. He is currently a writer of Ice Cream Maker Basics.com where he is called up to write on topics related to electric ice cream makers

Choose The Right Coffee Maker For Your Brewing Needs

Author: Corey Martin  //  Category: food

The process of researching today’s coffee makers to find the best one for your needs is not something to be taken lightly. Every coffee lover likes to wake in the morning to their favorite blend and if you are going to buy a machine for your home you should educate yourself a little to get the right model. If this sounds a little overwhelming it really isn’t. As long as you know the main differences between the types of machines you will be able to narrow the field down. This will better your chances of success.

The first thing to ponder when researching a new coffeemaker is the kind of filter you want, with the two choices being a basket or a cone. While each provides a slight difference in the way the coffee is brewed it is not significant. The basket filter will give you a longer contact time between the coffee grounds and the water which may affect the taste. Really though, the choice will come down to what you like better so it is recommended to try both before buying.

Another thing to consider is the overall appearance of your new machine. Today’s coffee makers are generally quite modern looking with very unique features between them. Your kitchen may have a certain decor that you want to keep consistent so finding a match could take time. If you have all stainless steel appliances then you might have to look around for that stainless coffeemaker with all the brewing capabilities you need. If you really don’t care what the color is then a black is recommended as it won’t show the wear as much as other colors.

Another popular feature that you can find on many machines is an automatic timer. These timers can be set to start the process of brewing at any time you need. You can wake up to the sweet aroma of freshly brewed coffee which is a great way to start the day. One thing to consider is the grounds will be sitting all night, exposed to the air, and this may affect the taste. Some people cannot tell the difference but again it is something to think about.

For those coffee lovers who want a fresh and robust flavor, a grinder is a great solution. If you grind up the beans right before brewing the grounds will be very fresh which will affect the taste in a positive way. While a built-in grinder could be seen as a convenience you might want to think about a standalone one. They tend to do a better job since they are purpose built for grinding. Plus they are generally easier to clean than the ones attached directly to the machine. Filtered water can also give you better flavor so you can look for a model with a built-in filtration system. Keep in mind that these features will raise the price, sometimes significantly.

Finding the best coffee maker may not be an easy thing but it can be done with a little bit of time. When comparing machines try to stick with the most popular brands as they will likely provide a more consistent temperature and a more consistent flavor. After all, the flavor is really what you are after and what will keep you brewing every morning.

To learn more about today’s popular choices visit atozcoffeemakers.com where you can find out all about such brands as bunn, braun, cuisinart, and of course keurig coffee makers. Learn which one is the best choice for your home.

The Psychology Of Balloon Boy

Author: Carlo Mueres  //  Category: food

This past week we saw the news media captivated by the idea that a 6-year-old boy, Falcon Heene had been carried off by a weather balloon. That is until the boy was later found in his own garage attic and shortly thereafter it was revealed on a television news show that the entire incident was likely a hoax. In replying to a reporter’s question, the young Falcon turned to his dad on camera and said, “You guys said that, umm, we did this for the show.” Oops.

The parents – Richard Heene and Mayumi Heene – have all along claimed it was not a hoax or a publicity stunt. Now, according to The New York Times, the parents will voluntarily surrender to police as soon as charges are filed, which is expected to happen on Wednesday.

While the truth continues to unfold, the police in the investigation have concluded it was likely indeed a publicity stunt: “We have evidence to indicate it was a publicity stunt done with the hope of marketing themselves to a reality-television show sometime in the future,” said Larimer County sheriff Jim Alderden on Sunday afternoon at a news conference in Fort Collins, Colorado.

So that leaves us with the inevitable question – what could possibly psychologically motivate parents to use their child’s very life in order to further themselves?

We see clues to the answer in some other information that’s trickling out about the parents. ABC News noted that former business partner Barbara Slusser – who chased hurricanes and other storms with the Heenes – that they parted ways when Slusser felt that the Heenes often put their kids in harm’s way. Slusser told ABC News, “The last straw for us was when Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike were heading toward the Texas coastline and Heene wanted to go back there and take the kids.”

So we seem to have a set of parents who already don’t quite understand the idea of how to raise children in a safe, responsible and thoughtful manner, thinking nothing of storm-chasing hurricanes and tornadoes with their young children in tow. Storm-chasing, of course, can be a very dangerous and unpredictable endeavor. One of the reasons adults do it is for the thrill of the unpredictability of the storm – putting oneself in harm’s way to experience a ferocious component of nature. But your children? They aren’t old enough to make such decisions for themselves – they trust their parents’ good judgment and experience.

But an account on Gawker by someone who worked with Richard Heene sheds even more light on the Heenes’ motivation – money and additional fame. This was a family that had been on the television program, Wife Swap, and they had already tasted celebrity. They wanted more of it.

Dementia Managing

Author: Robert Sanders  //  Category: food

Part of the problem in finding drugs which may be effective for dementia is that our ideas about what constitutes dementia have been undergoing radical change in recent years. It had been traditional to distinguish between Alzheimer’s dementia, or senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (SDAT) and multi-infarct dementia (MID), which is theoretically caused by small strokes which insidiously pick off brain tissue to the point where an individual’s cognitive function is compromised.

It was originally thought that MID accounted for 60%+ of the dementias. Accordingly, early attempts to treat the dementias concentrated on the multi-infarct dementias. The initial hypothesis was that these multiple small strokes were being caused by a process of hardening of the arteries, sometimes called arteriosclerosis and sometimes atherosclerosis (although these terms refer to two quite different disorders) which impaired blood supply to the brain. The logical treatment, therefore, for this condition was to attempt to dilate blood vessels. This led to the use of a wide number of vasodilating drugs such as hydralazine.

It is quite rare now for such drugs to be used for this purpose. Arguably, if anything, such treatment may have made the condition somewhat worse in that a potential effect of vasodilators is the reduction of blood pressure and reducing blood pressure would mean that the brain would be less perfused with blood, as one of the functions of blood pressure in the first instance is to provide the propulsive force to send blood up against the force of gravity to perfuse the brain.

Stage 2

More recent attempts to treat the dementias have proceeded on the basis that Alzheimer’s dementia is the commonest form of dementia. For many years, the term Alzheimer’s dementia was reserved for dementias that came on before the age of 65 (for this reason it was also called persenile dementia), which were not obviously caused by strokes. It was conceded that there was another dementia that was like Alzheimer’s dementia, which appeared to come on after the age of 65 but this was thought to be less common. Distinctions on the basis of age have now collapsed and both dementias of the Alzheimer type are now called senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. The amalgamation of these two groups led to an awareness that Alzheimer’s-type dementia is the commonest form. The primary therapeutic focus in the field, therefore, has been on an attempt to reverse the deficits which are supposed to be present in SDAT.

In particular, it has been held that in Alzheimer’s, there is a dysfunction of cholinergic pathways in the brain, for which there are both historical and clinical reason. Historically, when early work in psychopharmacology began, there were only four known neurotransmitters – noradrenaline, 5-HT, dopamine and acetylcholine (ACh). Noradrenaline quickly became the neurotransmitter involved in depression and mood disorders. Dopamine was known to be involved in Parkinson’s disease, and, when it became clear that neuroleptics acted on it, schizophrenia, after which the psychoses in general came to be seen as disorders of dopamine neurotransmission. For the most part, 5-HT was associated with either depression or anxiety. This left ACh without a function. It seemed convenient to parcel it out to the dementias.

There was, in addition, some clinical evidence in favour of an association between the cholinergic system and dementia. Part of the reason for this claim can be seen in a number of the chapters of this blog, in which drugs with anticholinergic effects have been noted as potentially causing amnesia or confusion (see The Management of Side Effects & Side Effects of Antidepressants articles).

Stage 3

In the last 5 years, a number of other dementias have been described. A distinction has been drawn between cortical and subcortical dementias. The cortex of the brain is the area responsible for higher cognitive functions, such as speaking, reading, planning and executing actions, etc In the cortical dementias, memory is usually the function most noticeably affected but those who are affected also have problems with planning even simple functions such as dressing and they typically cannot read, draw or execute any complex tasks. Alzheimer’s and MID are cortical dementias. There are also subcortical parts to the brain which are common to humans and other mammals. They involve a number of what are termed midbrain and brainstem structures.

Slim Down Before Inauguration Day with These 8 Simple Steps

Author: Dorthy Weatherbush  //  Category: food

How do you like the way you look? Are you satisfied with they way you present yourself to the rest of the world? Are you the confident person you know you can be or do avoid interacting with others simply because you feel uncomfortable and self conscious? Today is your lucky day because today you can make a choice that can change your destiny. If you are sick and tired of living a life of defeat, then you will want to listen up. Commit to the process of transforming your body today and before Obama takes the oath of office on January 20th, you’ll feel and look like you’ve had a million dollar makeover.

For you step one is to simply get you up and out of that sedentary lifestyle. The key is to get your metabolism going as quickly as possible. To do this, wake up just 10 minutes early and take a brisk walk around your home two to three times.

After that, you must make sure that you always eat a healthy breakfast. There are those who say that eating in the morning is the most important meal of the day however is it really. If you eat donuts and other pastries, is that really good for you? To have a real impact on your figure, put the donuts and kolaches down and pick up the fresh fruit and yogurt.

You need to take a serious look at what you are putting into your body for fuel. Candy and soda may have the sugar in it for a quick jump-start, but it does not have the lasting nutrients that you need for energy. Make sure that you are enjoying a balanced diet that has lots of fruits and vegetables in it. These are lower in calories, but help your stomach to stay full.

Put away your coffee mugs and break open a case of bottled water. You may not know it but caffeinated drinks like coffee or soda actually rob your body of the nutrients it needs to look and feel great. The point here is simple, give up the crap you put into your body and call it food. Next, eat food that is alive and not processed.

Your next step is to count calories better than old Ebenezer Scrooge counted his pennies. By staying abreast on how many calories you are consuming each day, you are better able to plan meals an establish portion controls. The good news is that this doesn’t mean you give up what you love to eat, rather it simply means you might it less of what you love eat.

Eat early and eat often. This may be counter intuitive but it actually does work. Try it and you’ll discover that if you watch what you eat and how much of it you eat, that if you were to munch on smaller portions throughout the day rather than having only 3 large meals a day, that you would rarely feel hungry and your metabolism will shoot through the roof.

Write down what you are eating. It’s easy to forget what you have been putting into your mouth, but by writing it down you will give yourself an accurate view of what you are eating. This provides you with some accountability and knowledge as to what you are including in your diet.

In closing, you must adopt a no quit attitude. Listen, trying to change and create a new and improved you is no easy task. It will take your sincere effort and there will be times when you will feel like quitting. These are the times when you have to dig in even more and push yourself through. If you can must the courage to carryon in the midst of adversity, then you will sure to have the body of your dreams by the time President Elect Obama is sworn into office.

Newbe Guide To Boat Charter

Author: Tom Binns  //  Category: food

If you want to make your coastal or island vacation really special then hire a boat. You can make it a real day to remember. If you’ve never considered this before then make sure you consider the following points so that your dream day doesn’t turn to a disaster.

“Bareboat” mean that there’s no crew so if you have chartered bareboat and you can’t sail you’re going nowhere. Not unless you qualify and get the necessary papers yourself. Always check the boat comes with a skipper and crew. The charter company can usually organise this for you. In some countries (like Spain) they may have legal problems supplying you with one.

If you have a power boat then you will normally be charged a fuel surcharge. Get an estimate of cost before you set sail!

The effects of the sun are up to three times as powerful at sea as on land. Make sure you take a hat and some sun block. The ladies might like to know you can tan three times the normal speed at sea.

Snorkel and goggles are a must if you are going to moor up and take a dip in the sea. They’re great for spotting jelly fish before it’s too late [a problem in the Med] or sharks [in other seas]

Always listen to the safety warnings at the start of the journey. Children must always be supervised and in life jackets. You may consider weather you should take younger children at all.

It’s tradition to tip the skipper at the end of a trip or if you are lunching ashore it’s often a good idea to invite the skipper along, he might have some great sea stories to share with you.

That’s it! Have fun it should be one of the best days of your holiday!

How to Maintain Your Weight Even While Attending Holiday Parties

Author: Dorthy Weatherbush  //  Category: food

The season is upon us again, tis the season to overeat. Seems like no matter how hard you try, overeating during the holidays is as much a part of things as gifts and decorations. Make it different this year by following the few tips listed below, beginning with number ten and working our way to number one!

10) The simplest thing that you can do this holiday season to curb your overeating is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water daily and especially before that holiday get together. You will feel fuller faster and be less likely to overindulge.

9) Eat before you go! When attending the many holiday dinners and parties take the time to eat a healthy snack. When you do not go hungry, you will be less likely to over indulge.
8) Get a little of a lot. At many holiday functions there is more food in more varieties that you can shake a stick at. What trips many people up are that they feel they have to have a full plate of these goodies and then another full plate of those goodies. That is not the case. Rather than getting more of a little, why not get a little of a lot. This way you’ll get to sample everything but your waistline will not expand.

7) Never miss a meal. I realize this may sound strange but it is so true. Many people think they are doing themselves a favor by skipping lunch or breakfast because they feel they are saving room for the big dinner party that night. This is so far from the truth it is not even funny. Keep your daily routine and consider a doggie bag if you are too full by party time.

6) Try something new for the holidays. Instead of making tons of pies and candies, look up some healthy alternatives. Choose a healthy exotic treat of fresh fruits instead.

5) Add more physical activity to your holiday routine. Parties and dinners are fun events during this time of the year but when you can add some ice-skating, sledding, or a walk with friends to the mix.

4) Don’t get lazy. Just because you may be on vacation from work doesn’t mean you have permission to take a vacation from your workout. Normally we get off of our daily routines because we are free from the cares of work and school however some thing must continue to be part of your overall healthy lifestyle.

3) Create a plan of attack. Going to a holiday dinner or party without a plan is like going into battle without a strategy. Before you arrive, think about the types of foods that you like and decide ahead of time what one delicacy you’ll delight yourself with. This way you will not feel bad about eating what you like but you will know exactly when you’ve gone too far.

2) Add some weight training to your work out. Knowing that you will be consuming more calories this time of year why not add some weight training to the mix. Lean tissue burns more calories than fat.

1) Take time for you to relax and meditate. This is the time that depression is at a high. Depression can lead to overeating and then more depression. Beat the blues this year by relaxing and not letting worry and frustration overtake you.

These are the top ten holiday eating tips that will help you burn more calories. Take a few or all of them and put them to work in your life this holiday season. Who knows maybe you will not need that New Year’s resolution to lose weight after all.

Pre-Teen Obesity: An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth 100 Pound Cure

Author: Dorthy Weatherbush  //  Category: food

Everywhere you look, you’ll see the signs of an obesity epidemic in the United States. Adults struggling with their weight, levering themselves into and out of cars. Many so morbidly obese that they’ll circle a parking lot four or five times before parking rather than be forced to walk an extra hundred feet.

In reality we can all agree that having excess body fat would work to your advantage if you lived in Siberia. Why? Because there, you have to work for your food, brave the cold and brutal weather conditions just to survive. Today in America you almost don’t have to work to do anything. With the advent of remote control entertainment systems, pizza delivery and wireless telephones, the average American never has to leave the sofa.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in looking at childhood obesity and nutrition. Nutritionists estimate that for every point of body mass index a child is overweight by before puberty, the adult that child will grow into will be three points overweight by the time they’re thirty. Type II diabetes, where body stress from overeating builds up resistance to insulin, is becoming more prevalent in teenagers.

Preteens, tweens and teenagers are also prone to body image dysmorphia, driven by peer pressure, social imaging and just the changes their body is going through. Being a teenager is hard enough as it is; it’s even worse when you’re carrying 40 or 60 extra pounds of body weight and alarmingly, the fastest growing market segment for diet products like SlimFast and MediFast are teenaged and younger girls.

On the positive side of things, I want to let you know that there is hope. There is an easy way to solve this downward trend.

Remember when you were a kid? You know, before video games like the Nintendo Wii. You actually had friends who played outside with you. You had energy and used it.

If you felt tired or felt dehydrated, you immediately reached for a glass of water or milk. Sweets were a treat for good behavior rather than your main course. Snacks did not come prepackaged but rather apples, oranges and bananas were your choice.

While the fast food outlets might not want you to know this, many parents are successfully teaching their kids to make healthy eating decisions. Today however, water too many of our youth is like the library, they’ve heard about it but never fully experienced it. Listen up parents. Sodas, juices or energy drinks are not a substitute for water. When properly hydrated, hunger pangs were shown to decrease significantly compared to those individuals who consumed no water.

As for snacks, limit their intake of high sugar and high fattening foods and increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables. This may not be as hard as you think. Consider this, if you kids are not of driving age and do not have a job, the only reason they are eating the way they are is because you as the parent purchase the unhealthy food in your kitchen. Trust me, if you don’t buy it, they will immediately decrease their over consumption. Oh yeah, they’ll complain however it is up to you to be the parent.

When it comes to leisure activities, encourage your kids to play sports – soccer, baseball, softball. Not all kids will have an aptitude for them, and some aren’t ready to socialize in large groups when the rest of their age cohort is. For those kids, make time out every week to go on a hike for a mile or two. If you get in the habit of walking for a mile as a family every day after dinner, everyone will be healthier, and you’ll be staving off the perils of the obesity epidemic.

The key to providing life long health for your kids is inculcating these habits early in life, so they become habits. Explain why you’re doing it when they ask, but don’t preach. Your kids will adopt the behaviors they see you doing – you’re their parent, their role model, and these are the habits they’ll stick with as they get older.

If your teen is obese, what options do you have? Author Dorthy Weatherbush has taken the guess work out of determining if your teen would benefit from a doctor recommended meal replacement diet. Learn more about her suggestions at http://www.StephensonandCompany.com
